We Are Handsome

November 18th, 2009

It might not be quite the right time of year to be throwing out posts like this, but if you’re heading off for a bit of winter sun and feel you can pull off some wonderfully kitsch swimwear designs then you couldn’t do much better than these wonderfully borderline tacky prints from Sydney based artist Jeremy Somers and swimwear designer Indhra Chagoury. Being individually made from high grade Italian Lycra and printed with high density inks, We Are Handsome’s collection is suitably limited edition, meaning that if you’re bold enough to make the statement then you’ll no doubt be rewarded with exclusivity.

And here was us thinking axes were just for those who got their hands dirty for a living, or serial killers. Looks like we were wrong however, or at least that’s what designer and author Peter Buchanan-Smith, and outdoorsman and environmental entrepreneur Graeme Cameron of Best Made Co. tell us, but then they would, because it’s their wonderfully stylish (did we just say that about an axe?) axes that we’re talking about. All made to order, with hand painted, varnished and polished Tennessee Hickory handles, Best Made Co.’s tools mean serious business and if you’re tool collection is in need of a luxe upgrade then they’re certainly a good start.

fast food just got interesting

Barburrito

November 16th, 2009

Following in similar footsteps to those of Nando’s, Manchester, and now Liverpool, based Barburrito is a refreshing alternative to the dirge of modern high-streets, the ‘Fast Food’ outlet. There’s times we all need a quick on-the-go bite to eat, but so often the choices are repulsive enough to leave us going hungry, that’s why we’re so excited about Morgan Davies and Paul Kilpatrick’s delicious brainchild, a no frills, stylish homage to classic Mexican street food. Listed in the Guardian’s top 50 healthy fast food establishments and winner of a rapidly increasing number of awards, Barburrito is a brand that we think you’ll be seeing a lot more of in the near future, and our stomach’s for one are relishing that thought.

So we finally got ourselves on Facebook. As part of our new improved self we wanted to ensure that all our readers could keep a close eye on our increased stream of lifestyle goodness and it seemed we’d finally have to bite the bullet and get ourselves a Facebook presence. As with everything, and not least our Twitter account, we don’t want to just do thing for the sake of it, so have decided to include regular exclusive content on our Facebook page and we’re also planning some exclusive competitions, this will not simply be the typical automated feed that is sadly so often seen. Join in now and look forward to so much more to come.

We’re gonna say this quietly, but ‘grunge’ is looking an early contender for the revival story of 2010. Electronic music, and the wonderfully dirty bass of dubstep/wonky/aquacrunk/[insert this weeks sub-genre], may be continuing it’s relentless ascendancy from underground to overground, but the outrageous uninhibitedness of ‘Pulled Apart By Horses‘ and pop-rock sensibilities of ‘Dinosaur Pile-Up‘ certainly look set to take a grip on the nation’s playlists in the coming 12 months. No better time then to reminisce one the fabulously gritty late 80s to early 90s Seattle and it’s grubby assortment of disenfranchised youths who would go on to change the face of modern rock music. Celebrated rock photographer Michael Lavine showcases his work from the time whilst Sonic Youth legend Thurston Moore writes fondly of the movement and the bands involved. Whether you’re looking to the future or just want to relive a bit of your heady youth, this beautifully presented book is a must-have.

Digital Wallpaper, Strukt Design Studio

November 11th, 2009

Blowing the myth that nothing exciting comes from Austria right out of the water, Strukt Design Studio are a design agency specialising in interactive media installations for events and exhibitions, and they’re certainly exciting us, especially so with this ‘must have’ digital wallpaper installation. Using video projectors, heaps of sophisticated machinery, and brains bigger than most of us could imagine, Strukt set about transforming the space of events agency Büro Hirzberger into a life-size retro computer game. The beautifully simplistic stripes are elegantly realised to create a truly awe-inspiring visual effect, watch the video for proof of this, and a rather special ‘Pac Man’ treat, you won’t believe your eyes!

being 'green' need not sacrifice luxury

The Scarlet, Cornwall

November 9th, 2009

Sprawling across a sizeable portion of Cornish coastline, The Scarlet Hotel looks all Bond villain with it’s cavernous luxury, floor to ceiling windows and dramatic cliff views, however, there is nothing remotely villainous about this spectacular building and the 5* luxury it beholds. Quite the contrary, this is as good as it gets.

Eco, green, sustainable, it all adds up to the same thing: we have a responsibility to minimise our negative impact on the planet.
The Scarlet Hotel

With it’s Forest Stewardship Council-approved timber frame, grey and rain water harvesting, solar heating, biomass boiler and even a natural pool with a living reed bed as a filtration system, The Scarlet is quite possibly the greenest hotel you’ll stay at, they even re-homed worms before beginning construction. As can often the case, luxury has not been compromised in the quest for the ultimate in sustainability, no expense has been spared in the lavish attention that the rooms, communal spaces, spa and exterior have received.
