Every now and then you see a building or interior space which takes your breath away, sometimes it might be modern day masterpieces such as the Empire State or the new BMW Welt, other times it could be the classic European churches and cathedrals, it’s rare that the two are fused with such beauty and elegance as they are here in this 13th Century Dominican church in Maastricht, Holland, the site of what could possibly be the world’s most inspirational bookshop.
Dutch architects Merkx + Girod have already won awards and acclaim for their inspirational transformation of this haunting building which until recently was being used to house the many bicycles of the citizens of Maastricht. The high rise bookshelf which dominates the interior contrasts the classical interior which boasts ceiling paintings dating back to 1619, we simply adore the crucifix table which is the central attraction of the cafe bar and while we are simply in awe of this fantastic architectural curiosity we also love the fact that we can enjoy a beer whilst browsing books about sex, drugs and rock n’ roll in what was once a holy temple!
