From devising the fabulously opulent Studio 54 nightclub, Ian Schrager created a hotel on Madison Avenue, New York City, that was so original and so unique in both it’s design and approach to it’s visitors that it gave birth to the term ’boutique’ hotel and revolutionised the business for good. That was 1984 and this is now, Schrager has left the corporation he started with (and named after) that hotel, the Morgans Group, an International chain of designer hotels that includes the London design icon the Sanderson and he’s now working on something exciting with Marriott hotels. Some would think that the lack of his guru like presence would signal the end for the Morgans Group, however, thanks to über-designer Marcel Wanders, the Mondrian South Beach Hotel in Miami looks set to blow the door off the hotel game once more.

Dutch-born Wanders has created a fantasy world having been given creative freedom by Morgan’s and it shows with these 3D renders from his website, floral prints and retro-flocking are fused with futuristic shapes and intelligent use of natural light.

Having only recently reported on Wanders’ stunning designs for the Lute Suites in Amsterdam it’s fair to say that we might just be becoming Marcel Wanders ‘fanboys’ and we’re positively excited about this hotel and whatever might come next for the ‘wander’ designer (sorry, sorry, we had to…. maybe we should be writing for the Sun).

As for Morgans this looks set to put them at the very forefront of innovative hotels once more and if they have anything else remotely as extravagant as this in the pipeline then we can predict only the best things for them. There is no official word yet on when this opens, the website leaves it with a pretty open date of 2008, however if you have half a million dollars burning a hole in your pocket then you can talk to them about snapping up an apartment there and become a permanent resident!

We’ll keep you posted on any news on when this beauty opens up and of course post some actual photographs to see if they manage to capture the magnitude of these wild designs!
