Steve Schofield is the sort of photographer we really love, a photographer with a unique ability to capture absurdity within a mundane setting, much like We Heart Stuff favourite Martin Parr, Schofield has a stunning knack for capturing quintessential Britishness, however he beautifully juxtaposes that with his fascination for the influx of American popular culture and it’s affect on our lives, and more importantly the lives of his obsessed subjects.

Land of the Free” is a unique collection of works that focus solely on British people who have become so caught up with American cult figures that they seek to emulate their ‘heroes’ and are intriguingly bound by their own obsessions. The work throws up all sorts of questions about ideology, culture, freedom and media and leaves the viewer to trying to find answers. Thought provoking, beautifully executed and intriguing, Schofield’s work is daring and worthy of mass appreciation, we would love to see a book made of this body of work, are you listening Steve?

Much of daily life is influenced by ‘Americanisms’ whether through language, food or fashion, which can often be traced back to music videos, the Hollywood film industry, advertising and American sit-coms.
