Originally commissioned by a Reykjavik recording studio, the Ísbjörn / Ice Bear has now been released in an edition of 10. At 3 metres the rug claims to be ‘full size’ polar bear and is made from 15 Icelandic sheep skins which have been cut up and stitched together to resemble an old butchers diagram, and of course luxury fur products which are similarly made from sewn up off-cuts. This play on the techniques of creating luxury goods combined with the universal feeling of love and respect for polar bears offers an interesting look on the sickness and stupidity of the fur industry and what Recht calls, ‘branding the concept of life and animals into a consumers resource’.
