For too long the fortified wine produced in the region of Jerez, southern Spain, has had an image in the UK as an ‘old person’s drink’ and been looked down upon by wine aficionados. Thanks to a marketing charm offensive along with an increasing appreciation of matching wines to foods, sherry is making somewhat of a comeback, and Spanish giant Tio Pepe is right at the heart of this revival.
By law, much like Champagne, Chianti and other similar famous names, Sherry must be produced within a small triangular area of the province of Cádiz around Jerez, if you have the pleasure of visiting Andalusia’s gourmet capital, Jerez de la Frontera, then it is obligatory to pay a visit to the impressive bodega of Gonzalez Byass. The classic Tio Pepe fino is made here, along with a wide array of other types of sherry and even Spanish brandy, the casks of which are sold to Ireland and Scotland to be used in the making of their famous whiskeys.
Enjoyed by Jerez locals for over a century with traditional tapas dishes, Tio Pepe have decided to recreate this for the rest of us by producing a luxury foodie gift set. The gourmet box contains treats from some of the best delis and suppliers around and includes chorizo, goat’s cheese, wild boar prosciutto and manchego amonst other delights, and of course a bottle of the world’s best selling fino to boot!
