Take one run down Georgian terrace near King’s Cross and one designer/gallery curator, throw in centuries of interior design ideas (the building has been listed since the 1850s, limiting the amount of redevelopment possible) and you have the Rough Luxe concept. Rabih Hage, whose gallery and design studio invest in cutting edge design and up-and-coming new talents, decided soon into the refurbishment project of his clients Georgian property, when beginning to peel away layers of wallpaper, that the textures of years of occupation would lend a unique characteristic to the hotel. ‘Deconstructed’ walls are juxtaposed by modern art, contemporary paper and photographic murals, elsewhere door fixtures show character with their obvious wear and tear and an original 1960s utilitarian kitchen in the basement remains.

Whilst it can look like the decorators never completed their contract, the partially sanded surfaces, bare floorboards, chipped paint and rough edges are all complimented by top quality finishings, bringing the ‘luxe’ element to the project. Rabih himself went overboard at the recent Savoy Hotel auction, bidding for huge quantities of crockery, cutlery, fittings and furniture that accompany the top quality beds and mattresses as well as the fine linen in the bedrooms.

If you are sick of conventional modern hotels with their generic amenities and bland colour schemes then the Rough Luxe Hotel may well provide you with a novel travel experience in London, if your’re elsewhere in the world, don’t worry, you can expect to see the concept coming your way soon as they look to introduce an ever increasing number of hotels, lodges, bars, restaurants, shops and bespoke destinations to their roster, such as their enchanting Cowshed in St Moritz.
