The Brooklyn Music Scene

The Brooklyn Music Scene

Apes & Androids

What have they been putting in the water in Brooklyn? First it was the utterly fabulous Yeasayer, then MGMT blew up big time. This explosion of psychedelic alternative goodness has seemingly paved way for an international onslaught from the indie music scene of Brooklyn as the world’s music press look to find the ‘hot-tips for 2009′ and ‘the new MGMT’. Looking most like emulating that level of success are Amazing Baby with their very 1970′s brand of psychedelic rock, that is both Black Sabbath and The Doors in equal measures, being the most accessible of the burgeoning talent on this huge local scene. Taking the psychedelic elements of rock one stage further into a more ‘prog-rock’ cum ‘new-rave’ formula that our very own Late of the Pier ply with success are the chaotic Apes & Androids whose wild live shows could see them soon buying shares in a phosphorescence manufacturer. Rounding off the ’70s tinged psychedelia are the lesser known Picture Picture although based on their sun-drenched Woodstock vibed Give Love, this is something that could soon change.

Telepathe

Telepathe

It’s not just MGMT/Yeasayer style psychedelics going on in Brooklyn however and there are an array of talented electro-pop acts to proove just that. Telepathe produce dark, sparse and uncomfortable electronica that sounds like Ladytron conducting a tribal, haunting séance whilst Chairlift and Red Wire Black Wire introduce a more accessible brand of electronica. Chairlift are our pick of the bunch with their melodic electro-pop which comes on like Kraftwerk producing a Suzanne Vega album and is at that truly beautiful. Not so beautiful but possibly more of a spectacle are Boy Crisis who have been described as “absolutely the worst band in the world right now” by Pitchfork, proof then that your postcode is not all you need to make it these days? Expect to see them on heavy music channel rotation sometime soon maybe!

Bear Hands

Bear Hands

There’s much more where that lot come from too, Brooklyn today is looking like a seemingly endless pit of creative talent, Bear Hands promise big things with their more straightforward post-punk indie, there are lashings of post-rock, lo-fi noise merchants in the shape of White Suns, Cutter and Drunkdriver and one of our favourite new bands from Brooklyn are Bottle Up And Go who serve up some good old fashioned two-man raw blues akin to The Black Keys, Jawbone or Seasick Steve.
