In these times of international political correctness it’s not often that you will find the celebration of great British imperialism but tucked in a corner of the East Village, Manhattan, Double Crown is a spanking new restaurant doing just that. Celebrating the nineteenth century British presence in the countries of South Asia and the Far East, Double Crown offers classic colonial style courtesy of super-designers AvroKO and simple dishes like Lamb and Cashew Meatballs, Bangers and Mash and Goan vegetable curry alongside more adventurous cuisine such as Miso-Glazed Bone Marrow, Pheasant and Licorice Pie and Tandoori-marinated Foie Gras with Earl Grey prunes.

The vastly experienced cocktail director, Brian McGrory (once at the forefront of the early 90s members club explosion in London working at the seminal Groucho Club), looks after the seperate lounge/bar Madam Geneva where he has designed a drinks list that specialises in artisanal vodkas and gins which can be topped with preserves in flavours such as cranberry and aleppo, bramley apple and quince and saffron, all of which are made on the premises.
All in all, if your looking for a break from the countless French style brasseries in downtown Manhattan and want to take in the splendor of colonial Britain in all it’s un-diplomatic correctness then Double Crown is just waiting to be discovered.
