Motel chic has been somewhat of a trend over the last year or so with a number of ‘oh so kitsch’ establishments popping up around the west coast of America and drenching us Brits in a nostalgic shower of low budget 80s movies set in seedy cockroach infested motels with flickering neon lights. The Coen brothers’ recent instant classic ‘No Country for Old Men’ set our pulses racing again, and even ‘My Name is Earl’ has treated us to a certain motel nostalgia, it’s seems we just can’t get away from that visual treat of the low-rise motel, achingly hip back-lit signage and brightly coloured plywood doors. The new gods of tremendously cool American hoteliers, Ace Hotels, have a similar passion for the midly kitsch and have descended upon motel country for their latest uber-hip establishment, a kitsch-chic-hip-motel in the desert city of Palm Springs, California.

From simple double rooms to wonderful suites with patios and fireplaces, Ace Hotel Palm Springs is a motel for the *Wallpaper generation, unfeasibly cool furniture that would look just as at home in a high fashion photo shoot as it would in a white trash, redneck’s trailer and the latest amenities such as MP3 plugs and massive flat screen televisions juxtaposed with vinyl record players and unique vintage furniture. With a casual swim club and spa along with a cocktail bar and restaurant serving classic Californian dishes this is a chance to live out childhood fantasies with that certain level of chicness that you just know you deserve.
