It’s that time again when all the world’s most design conscious eyes are on Milan for it’s annual Salone Internazionale del Mobile furniture fair and the ever growing list of fringe shows, exhibitions, galleries and events that make Milan the coolest place on earth for the week at least. As the main event runs from 22-27 April we will be throwing up a number of posts dedicated to the most exciting new products on display, continue reading for your first installment of design goodness…….

Luceplan Hope

Rather sophisticated materials such as ‘polycarbonate lenses’ and ‘concentric micro-prisms’ have been employed by designers Francisco Gomez Paz and Paolo Rizzatto in an attempt to recreate the natural effect crystal has on light. Hope, a modern day take on the chandelier from Luceplan will be on show at their own Milan headquarters, via E.T. Moneta 40.

Form Us With Love

Our favourite Swedish designers, Form Us With Love, will be launching their ‘Man-size Mekano’ concept, which will see the Mekano assembled by hand and ‘transformed into functional objects like hangers and room dividers’ at the Superstudio piu, Zona Tortona.

Tokyo Fiber

Tokyo Fiber Senseware ‘09, an exhibition directed by Japanese designer Kenya Hara, features some of the most innovative products in Milan this year. Shaped masks and lampshades from moldable nonwoven fabric, products with softness and firmness from the same material, knitted bundles of light, super lightweight chairs and rucksacks and a unique water logo are just some of the futuristic products exhibiting at La Triennale di Milano.

Sebastian Jansson

Finnish designer Sebastian Jansson is showcasing a collection of new products at Salone Satellite, Stand E29. If you’re a Twitter-freak you may be interested in following his Milan adventures.

Revolving Chandelier

Possibly not wholly embracing the green aspects that a number of this years designers will no doubt be focusing upon, Dutch designer Bertjan Pot presents a revolving chandelier that has four half reflective, half transparent light-shades balanced on a small steel tip, rising air heated by the three halogen bulbs makes all four light-shades rotate, at least the three bulbs are doing some constructive. Showing at Spazio Rossana Orlandi.

Morfojet

An air travel inspired futurist monstrosity that looks more lad’s mag than *Wallpaper, Morfonauta’s Morfojet chair is at first glance certainly not what you would expect from the Milan furniture fair but what is?  The Morfojet’s pure outrageousness has an endearing quality and the powerful built in sound system and MP3 player certainly helps matters, catch it at the “Fuori Salone del Mobile 2009” at Hotel Nhow.

Marina Bautier

If the Morfojet is just too much for you, this beautifully simple modular seating system with integrated lighting is so very Milan and is just one of four new products that Belgian designer Marina Bautier is showing at Galleria Bonaparte, via Pontaccio 8/10.
