The Big Pink

The Big Pink

We’re mindful of the perennial danger of being caught up in the powerful wave that is ‘the hype’, especially so when the first track you drop is an ethereal masterpiece worthy of all it’s hype and much more besides. ‘Velvet’ was probably one of the most beautifully destructive debut singles of the last 10 years, but still, the hype was building momentum, and we resisted getting that excited until we heard more, but following a devastating set at Glastonbury, a new single (Dominos) with irresistible MGMT-style chart bothering potential and this week’s chance to listen to their debut album, ‘A Brief History of Love‘, it’s time to finally let go, and get seriously excited.

Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell don’t really look the type to get too excited themselves, but believe us, they should be, for their debut album which elegantly fuses Primal Scream at their best, The Verve‘s twisted country-flecked psychedelia and the obvious white noise references of The Jesus and Mary Chain, Spiritualized and Sonic Boom with digital hardcore, big-beat and industrial grade electronica, is one of the best we’ve heard in a number of years. It’s not just the music either, The Big Pink bring us the kind of fucked up narcotic induced stage presence that the pointy shoe wearing indie-lite brigade would walk across Camden high street to avoid. Debauched, ear splittingly noisy and with tunes big enough to ensure they bother the mainstream just enough to upset a few parents along the way, The Big Pink are all that great rock and roll should be. Hold tight!
