Pieter Hugo, Nollywood

Pieter Hugo, Nollywood

Pieter Hugo is a young South African photographer winning accolades for his dramatic and at times, unsettling images of real life throughout his troubled continent, his series of images of young men with hyenas and monkeys as pets gaining him international recognition. His latest work, and the subject of a new 112 page hardback book, covers a phenomenon that not many will be familiar with, the Nigerian film industry, or Nollywood, as the world’s third largest (this is unconfirmed of course) movie making industry is otherwise affectionately known. Obscenely low budget, the films are often made within a week with actors cast on the day of shooting, in very, very ‘real life’ locations, Nollywood’s movies are unlikely to receive a Palme d’Or in the near future. Hugo invited a selection of actors and assistants to recreate Nollywood myths and symbols as if they were on movie sets, the results are nightmarish, truly unique and often harrowing, this is far from the glitz and glamour of Bollywood, and rather pleasingly on a totally different planet to the sickening money pit that is Hollywood.
