It looks like working in the UX team at Nokia’s Soho Design Studio in London has just got a little bit more psychedelic… courtesy of designers Wai Chung Lau (No-Method) and Mark Holt (Better Thinking). Comprising of thirteen separate panels, each measuring over 6ft tall and over 3ft wide, and featuring visual elements derived from the curve, vertical and diagonal of the letters ‘U’ and ‘X’, the mural attempts to convey the UX teams belief that ‘the whole (experience) is the sum of the parts’…. whether the deeper meaning encourages workers at the central London office to engage more effectively in their thought processes and indeed ‘think about the bigger picture’, or whether it’s simply just somewhere pretty to have a coffee and chat about last night’s footy… the important thing here is that it looks rather pretty… and that, as they say, is that!

I think this mural is pretty weak in its design and concept. 13 separate panels that come together to create a whole. The idea is basically there but the execution is poor. Bringing the panels results in an overly busy mural. There isn’t really a structure for the eye to follow, there is no beginning, middle or end, and there appears to be no continuity from one panel to the next. If this is reflects how the UX team think of Nokia Phones’ OS then they really are in trouble. UX is all about expectations, repetition, no surprises, consistency and simple, straightforward interactions…
