Being responsible for some 500 album covers for legendary New York label Folkways, Ronald Clyne’s distinctive two-colour approach gave the label it’s internationally renowned style, and although his influence can be felt the world over, he enjoyed very little coverage in graphic design literature, rendering him a ‘lost hero’ of 20th century design. That is of course until now…. thanks to Unit Editions, London’s newest graphic design book publishers. Unit: Design/Research 01 is the first in a series of ‘newspapers’ that are “devoted to the neglected, hidden and unexpected corners of graphic design and visual culture”, and if this lovingly produced, 64 page, card bound debut edition is anything to go by, this is a series that anybody with even the remotest interest in visual arts should seek out, and follow religiously……
