LDF10: Making Believe, Goldsmiths Design Exhibition

For a college that’s famous for producing the likes of Damien Hirst, Julian Opie and Blur, you’d expect one of their postgraduate exhibitions to have a little ‘je ne sais quoi’ about it – and, as part of this years London Design Festival, Goldsmiths Design Department’s post-grad exhibition certainly had that, not least in it’s inspired surroundings – deep in the basement of Shoreditch’s beautiful Victorian town hall. The wonderfully dilapidated environment lent itself rather nicely to the exhibition’s loose concept of ‘making believe’ – as works that challenged the visitor’s perceptions of what is real or not were positioned within crumbling rooms, alleys and hidden coves in this eerily inspiring space that in itself questioned the boundaries of reality – part post-apocalyptic bunker, part art gallery. Engaging, challenging and expressing a unique sense of humour, the exhibition was all that is great about those design festival events that are ‘off the beaten – and commercial – track’…
