The Upside Dome, Gijs Van Vaerenbergh

surprising solution for 'missing' dome...

The Upside Dome, Gijs Van Vaerenbergh

Allegedly “one of the most prestigious baroque churches of the Low Countries” – we don’t know much about these things to be honest – the St Michiel Church in Leuven, Belgium has something missing, a dome. In an attempt to address this issue, and of course create a startlingly beautiful piece of work in the process, Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh challenged the perspectives of the traditional dome – inverting the space with hundreds of metres of chain to create a full size model that elegantly hangs where the dome itself would appear.
