Forever set to polarise opinion – it was once voted “London’s ugliest building” – the Chamberlin, Powell and Bon designed Brutalist icon that is the Barbican Centre has a pair of new dining venues courtesy of London based architects and designers, SHH. Respecting the heritage of the iconic architecture, SHH’s interiors strip the spaces back to original textures and fittings, introduce retro and vintage furniture and fixtures and even place that stunning Brutalist architecture centre of stage on their equally brilliant branding. Reclaimed classic mid-century Scandinavian modernist furniture sits alongside specially commissioned pieces from designer Stefan Bench, whilst stools from Danish designer Nanna Ditzel that were discontinued in the 1960s have been specially reissued for this project – with a stark, utilitarian lighting installation, courtesy of Beirut’s .PSLAB overlooking it all. Attention to detail is striking throughout, a peacock-green poured resin floor has been created as an exact colour match of a Summer photo taken of the outdoor Barbican lake, whilst Robin Day’s black polo chairs feature on the external terrace, referencing his position as the original art director of the Barbican in the early 1970s. Reverent, clever and sophisticated, we haven’t even got onto the food…
