fine art world's lucky dip spectacle prepares for this year's show...

RCA Secret 2010

When we think of lucky dips, we think 10 7″ singles bagged together in your local independent record store – ask your parents kids – or perhaps some kind of sweet filled surprise at a party. What we don’t think of is bagging an original piece from the likes of Tracy Emin, Yoko Ono, Sir Peter Blake or David Bailey, but then, this isn’t strictly a lucky dip – it’s the Royal College of Art‘s annual RCA Secret exhibition, where over 1,000 anonymous, postcard sized artworks are available to purchase for just £45 each, the catch being – come on, you knew there’d have to be a catch didn’t you? – that you don’t know whose the work is until you buy it. With donated works also coming from fashion designers Manolo Blahnik and Paul Smith, film maker Mike Leigh and designers Ron Arad and James Dyson, alongside budding artists from the college itself, RCA Secret 2010 is set to be another roaring success. The exhibition runs from Friday (12th November) for a week, with a one-day sale on Saturday 20 November, from 8am – do we need to say that we recommend getting there early? Exciting, unique and potentially a profitable day out, RCA Secret is a decidedly fun approach to art buying…
