We don’t mind admitting that we are more than a little obsessed with magazines and those whose iconic covers are daring, challenging and alluring. It would seem too, that we’re in good company – as the quite brilliant illustrator, JP Thurlow, is also somewhat of a magazine cover obsessive, so much so in fact that his current exhibition at Hoxton’s brilliant KK Outlet is a beautiful homage to 100 covers that have most inspired him, ranging from Dazed & Confused to Grafik, Arena Homme Plus to Vogue and Elle. Meticulously recreated, yet with his own – often dark – personality etched upon them, the 100 covers that comprise this exhibition, that runs until 30th November, are breathtaking and fascinating in equal measures. ““I try my best to reproduce the magazines as perfectly as I can but there’s always a moment where the drawing gets too cute and I get frustrated with the perfection… I am in love with the originals, but I don’t believe they tell the truth… I want to cut through the loveliness and reveal something that’s lurking behind.” – and that’s just what Thurlow has achieved, raw, passionate reinterpretations that make for a truly unique exhibition…
