Nestled amongst the ongoing construction of The Shard, Renzo Piano’s 1,000 foot skyscraper, the More London development and the polarising, brutalist beauty of Guy’s Hospital – new rooftop venue, Skyroom, is the perfect setting for an outdoor events space for The Architecture Foundation, who occupy the ground floor level of the 5-storey office it straddles. Launched with a series of events during this year’s London Design Festival, and designed by David Kohn Architects, winner of the UK Young Architect of the Year Award 2009, the imposing, bespoke structure of the Skyroom went from detailed design to completion in just 8 weeks with a limited budget, as such posing the intriguing question of how frequently this type of unique, outdoor extension could be achieved, offering an exciting new answer to limited space in the city. Beautifully conceived, and elegantly complementing one of the world’s great, eclectic skylines, let’s hope Skyroom is an inspiration for other creative spaces in the future…
