breathtaking speakers celebrate traditional Japanese craft...

Ceramic Speakers, by Nendo

How many ex-footballers do you think even know what a curator is, let alone launch their own art project? Well, Japanese footballers are clearly built of different stuff to ours… former Roma, Fiorentina and erm, Bolton Wanderers player, Nakata Hidetoshi – a footballer very much in the Beckham mold – is a fashion icon in his homeland of Japan, and has recently launched Revalue Nippon Project, a project aimed at revitalising traditional Japanese crafts through Nakata himself selecting five curators, each of whom selected one ceramicist and one designer (or contemporary artist) to collaborate on a unique piece of work. This breathtakingly beautiful, ceramic speaker is the result of curator Akimoto Yuji, director of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazaw, inviting We Heart favourites, Nendo, to collaborate with Mitsuke Masagasu, a Kanazawa-based potter whose work springs from the traditions of the local Kutani ware. Complimenting the elegant and elaborate lines of Mitsuke’s red-glaze designs by fusing them with the sophistication of digital manufacturing techniques, Nendo have created a set of high-end audio speakers in dazzlingly thin, 1mm ceramic substrate. The delicate fusion of Mitsuke’s traditional techniques and the bare beauty of the speakers’ technology, Nendo have created something that, if they the should ever go into production, could easily be a design icon. Intelligent, unique and breathtakingly beautiful…
