Thrusting through the stairwell of Frankfurt’s Frankfurter Kunstverein gallery recently, as part of the NODE10 digital arts forum, (n)arcissus – a site specific installation courtesy of New York design studio SOFTlab – is a wonderfully unique vision, part disturbing, organic alien life-form, part beautiful, gracious chandelier. Nine metres tall, the installation evolves as you ascend the stairwell as the 1,000+ custom panels of its skin change shape and invert from the reflective interior, that greets visitors in the lobby with their own distorted reflections, to the vivid gradated red that dominates the rest of the space. Massively innovative and expertly executed, (n)arcissus demonstrates SOFTlab’s radical vision and technical skill, highlighting the New Yorkers as a big name to watch out for in the international design world…
