James Blake

soul/dubstep experimentalist crafts first essential album of 2011...

James Blake

With a series of rather splendid post-dubstep EPs last year, Goldsmiths student 22 year-old James Blake made a name for himself as a serious chin-stroking electronic music producer of some note. If you were nodding your head in the backroom of a dubstep night somewhere last year then you’ll no doubt be familiar with his bass-heavy, jerky, progressive R&B sound. It may come as a surprise then that Blake’s eponymous debut owes as much to Anthony and the Johnsons as it does the dark sounds of cutting-edge electronica. Splicing his deeply emotional piano and multi-layered vocals with harrowing post-dubstep, ‘Limit To Your Love’ – the stark, claustrophobic single from late last year – is a perfect example of the intensity and beauty you’ll find on his utterly compelling forthcoming album. With Jamie xx’s collaborations and remixes filling the void left by his band’s current hiatus and Brit School kid Jamie Woon offering a more commercial take on the whole soul/dubstep thing, 2011 is shaping up to be a year for deep, plaintive, emotional electronica, and James Blake has already recorded the unnamed genre’s defining album…
