Kolonihavehus, Tom Fruin

Known for his work with found drug-bags, New York artist Tom Fruin put his latest artwork on display in Copenhagen recently. Turning his attentions to found Plexiglas – roughly 1,000 reclaimed scraps of the material – Fruin’s Kolonihavehus takes its name and inspiration from Copenhagen’s ubiquitous kolonihavehus; a modest garden shed intended to provide state workers with refuge from the city’s cramped living conditions. Standing in the Royal Danish Library’s plaza, Fruin’s fabulously vivid installation included computer controlled light sequences by Nuno Neto, a sound installation by Astrid Lomholt and featured a collaboration with CoreAct, the Copenhagen based performance company headed by Anika Barkan and Helene Kvint. If we ever find ourselves feeling a little green fingered and decide to splash out on a garden shed, you can be sure we’ll be getting in touch with the quite brilliant Tom Fruin for some tips…
