Cupcakes are big business, since their late 90s revival they’ve become pretty much the ubiquitous naughty-treat of choice, and high-end boutique bakeries flogging fancy versions of the humble ‘fairy cake’. Soho’s Cox Cookies & Cake is another ‘high-end boutique bakery’ of sorts, but, thanks to the glamour injected by co-owner, shoe-making legend Patrick Cox, and its seedy-chic location, this is a boutique bakery with a twist. “This is anything but your girly, Notting Hill cup-cake shop” say Cox and partner Eric Lanlard, a genuine master pâtissier who previously ran the Roux brothers’ pastry kitchens, and with it’s fabulously kitsch, sex shop vibe, staff in studded black leather aprons and cakes inspired by Warhol, skulls and, erm, tits, Cox Cookies & Cake is indeed a rather unique culinary experience…
