America’s “only museum dedicated to the art, history, technique, and technology of the moving image in all its forms”, the Museum of the Moving Image – located in the Queens neighborhood of Astoria – has, since 1988, offered a unique visual experience, an experience that has just been greatly improved, thanks to a $67 million building project. Doubling in size, and swagger, thanks to an exhilarating new look, courtesy of architect Thomas Leeser, the museum will bring anything from classics such as The Hustler and 2001: A Space Odyssey to cutting-edge video art installations to its visitors, there’s even late-night parties with VJs, “Laptop Rock” bands and ‘chiptune’ artists performing on hacked Gameboys. Along with housing the nation’s largest and most comprehensive collection of artifacts relating to the art, history, and technology of the moving image, the museum – and its beautiful new look – is a thoroughly engaging experience, and as good a reason as any for visitors to make the trip across the Ed Koch/Queensboro Bridge from Midtown Manhattan…
