Founded in 1894, Groninger’s museum of contemporary art caused quite a stir with it’s radically new building in 1994, thanks to 3 distinctive new pavilions from Philippe Starck, Italian designer and architect Alessandro Mendini, and Coop Himmelb(l)au, the Austrian agency famous for Munich’s BMW Welt amongst others. Late last year, the Dutch institution reopened after an 8 month ‘revitalization’, that has seen the museum maintain its ability to attract the world’s top design talents, with designers Maarten Baas, Studio Job and Jaime Hayon all contributing startling new areas. Dutch designer Baas has refurbished the museum’s Mendini Restaurant with a new series of models from his ‘Clay’ collection handmade specially for this project. Studio Job have created a spectacular new reception hall inspired by 19th-century private gentlemen’s clubs, whilst Spanish design-prodigy Jaime Hayon has delivered a truly breathtaking new visitors’ information centre in his own inimitable style.
