Björk; Crystalline Video, by Michel Gondry

Moons, lasers, utterly-beautiful graphics and the Icelandic queen of the curious with a gigantic ginger afro, trapped in some kind of godlike discoball. We’re not going to pretend to understand the latest offering from Björk and her longtime collaborator, French filmmaker Michel Gondry, but we’re sure as hell going to profess our unequivocal love for it. Taking elements from the song’s accompanying iPad app – each of the tracks from her ambitious new Biophilia album will be available in app form, housed inside the album’s ‘mother app’ – Gondry’s trademark handmade special effects are in full force, transporting us as close to the outlandish icon’s inner thoughts as we dare get. Word has it that Biophilia had originally been conceived as a 3D film with Gondry in the directors seat, if this is anything to go by then that would have come dangerously close to blowing our minds. As it is, Crystalline – and its accompanying video – is a solid statement of intent that pop’s most innovative star is back with a bang, and flexing her creative muscle all over the shop…
