Floating curiously, high above the hustle and bustle of downtown San Francisco – almost like a human-sized birdhouse – Manifest Destiny! is a charming, yet provocative, statement on the arrogant perseverance of the city’s early settlers. Named after the 19th century American belief that the US had a “god-given right” to expand throughout the continent; the installation – by Brooklyn-based artist Mark A. Reigelman II and local designer/artist Jenny Chapman – evokes sentiments of the ‘final frontier’, with its 19th-century architectural style and vintage building materials, whilst also satirising man’s relentless quest to claim every last available plot.
The duo’s humorous and thought-provoking work will remain affixed to Union Square’s Hotel des Arts until 28th October…
