Travel Like a Local

You can now wake up inside an artwork at Belgium’s Verbeke Foundation, right in the middle of a recording studio, or even – should it float your boat – inside a haunted treehouse...

Post produced on behalf of Wimdu

You haven’t got a pulse if you haven’t dreamt of spending the night in a closed shop; countless ’80s movies cemented this desire and it’s remained a life-long fantasy. For others, perhaps a night in a cinema… waking up to find you’re the star of the show? As hoteliers around the world continue to push the boundaries of hotel design, and experience, one company has gone a step further; putting the hotel (or more often, just a bed) into the experience itself. Yep, you can now wake up inside an artwork at Belgium’s Verbeke Foundation, right in the middle of a recording studio, or even – should it float your boat – inside a haunted treehouse.

As a platform for putting private accommodation at your perusal, Berlin-based website Wimdu allows locals to list their own apartment, house, shop, shed or, erm, manger (fancy a real Christmas experience, waking up on hay bales?). In fact, as some of our favourite picks prove, you’re able to list pretty much whatever you want; allowing the website’s visitors to select a mind-boggling array of overnight options – so we can all live out our youthful fantasies.
