Ruschmeyer’s, Montauk

Welcome to camp nostalgia...

British readers may struggle to reconcile this retro summer camp-style resort with the Butlin’s holidays of their childhood, but for the Stateside crew, this place hums summer like creek swimming and The Wonder Years. Based on a 1952 cabin-style building, Ruschmeyer’s is the latest offering from off-beat hoteliers King and Grove. Sat in three acres of greenery in Montauk, New York, the place is open from May to October when the weather suits the outdoor features.

The grounds are a highlight, and when the sun goes down the garden really comes into its own, with a lantern strewn lighting scheme, at the centre of which is an ethereal teepee. During the day there’s all the outdoor activities you could want, and it’s child-friendly as you’d expect.

Inside there’s a restaurant operated by the team who can claim credit for Manhattan’s Fat Radish, a cocktail bar for a nice sundowner, and the rooms follow the cabin theme with neutrally-painted wooden walls offset with bright furnishings. Time to regress back to your childhood in style…
