Palihotel, Melrose Avenue

surprising oasis of period calm...

Los Angeles doesn’t say “intimate” to most travellers, in fact it probably scares a lot of people spoon-fed violent cop dramas, so guests at the boutique Palihotel are in for a pleasantly welcoming surprise.

The 32-room establishment in Melrose, a rioter’s stone-throw away from movie studios and slap-bang in the middle of the Melrose shopping district, is a homely oasis in the full-on city. While the hotel is certainly contemporary, there is an array of period features which give the place a strange but pleasing sense of old-time class, whether it be the Anglepoise lamps or the selection of traditional artworks on display in the rooms. Just check out the reception desk that greets you on the way in, it sets the tone.

It feels relaxed, with a neighbourhood-style café rather than a full-on restaurant, and Thai massage is available. Just the sanctuary to return to after a day out on the LA streets.
