MAKE UP, Ayami Nishimura by Rankin

Face the future...

The beauty of this job is being confronted with new things all the time. I’ve got to be honest, the last time I wore make-up I was done up as Dracula for a fancy-dress party, aged 12, and it didn’t leave a lasting impression. While I won’t be wearing any in the forseeable future, a new collaboration between make-up artist Ayami Nishimura and the photographer currently known as Rankin is certainly leaving its mark.

An exhibition and book, MAKE UP combines London-based Nishimura’s vision of “cyber” with Rankin’s unmistakeable portraiture style. She cites elements such as techno, pop art, neon and digital as among her core themes, and utilises not just cosmetics but prosthetics and a varied array of materials to create her effects. The finished work was then captured by the iconic photographer and Dazed co-founder, whose wide variety of assignments run the gamut from Oxfam to the cover of Vogue.

The exhibition can be seen at Diesel Art Gallery, Shibuya, Japan, until 11th September.
