Residents of Sydney are waking up to an award-winning new café which delivers much more than just a jolt of caffeine.

The Grounds has set up shop in a former warehouse and pie factory and maintains links to its roots thanks to designer Caroline Choker. She’s used many industrial features to create a comfortable environment, while ensuring the original character is still at the forefront. Blackened steel sits on polished stone, exposed brick alongside ornate tiling.

The Grounds’ moniker is not just a play on the function of the premises (coffee grounds, geddit?) but a reference to the much more unusual form of the outside space, namely the kitchen garden at the back. The fresh produce grown here is used to create the food menu, and The Grounds does its own baking and bean-roasting. There’s also a roasting course for coffee-lovers who want to reproduce the flavours and aromas of the café experience in their own homes. Smells good to me.
