Holy crêpe...

Chuck your Atkins Diet book in the bin, carbs are back in a big way at London’s La Petite Bretagne creperie. Yes, now everyday can be Shrove Tuesday – it doesn’t matter if you’ve got “issues” with gluten or wheat, or even if you haven’t got a sweet tooth in your head. It appears everything you knew about pancakes is wrong.

Serving a choice of dessert or savoury crêpes using digestion-friendly buckwheat flour (or the traditional plain white stuff), this new establishment in Hammersmith is flying the French flag against the recent trend away from anything that tastes nice or that you might actually enjoy, while insisting it’s not all bad news for your belt notches. Yes, there are some pretty artery-hardening options for those married customers who no longer have to care what their reflection looks like, but bum-conscious consumers will quickly have their eyes drawn to the bespoke options which allow them to partner up a whole host of healthy ingredients.

Having had lunch, I can take a quick look at the design of the place (this is a design website, after all). Paul Crofts Studio is the company behind it, and they’ve used a subtle French theme throughout. Cheekily printing gingham tops on the custom picnic style tables, and decorative country kitchen shelving give a rustic charm. And attention to detail, such as the purpose-built lighting, ensure this crêperie feels anything but flat.

Beret nice!
