Marits Huiskamerrestaurant

Amsterdam restaurateur serves up very real home cooking...

There’s some pretty nice restaurants about these days, super-modern and stylishly fitted out, but let’s be honest, most of us couldn’t live with that style 24/7 – it’s quite nice to get home to something more… well, homely.

Diners in Amsterdam now have somewhere to go which marries fine dining with the comforting feel of a home-cooked meal in traditional – and decidedly beautiful – Dutch surroundings. Former fashion designer Marit Beemster has swapped couture for cookery in opening up her living room as a restaurant three days a week.

All the fixtures and fitting customers see as they tuck into the locally-sourced vegetarian menu are second-hand, selected by Marit herself with one eye on the restaurant business, and one on the practicalities of living. It’s all turn of the century meets mid-century, with plentiful classic yet quirky features; such as mantelpieced fireplaces used as mirrors, the adorable kitchen tiling details, and the painted white legs of Marit’s delightful vintage table and chairs.

Marits Huiskamerrestaurant is open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
