One of the oldest landmarks in Hungary, the venue for this installation is a Benedictine abbey dating back to 996AD, but since its founding the monks have been joined by the boys of a boarding school more recently attached. This school’s gym is the host for the Arcus Temporum Festival of classical music, and as part of the occasion three architects put their heads together and came up with the work you see before you.

Daniel Balo, Daniel Eke and Zoltan Kalaszi used only two elements for this praise-worthy installation – lightbulbs and textile. While the bulbs were laid out in a strict grid, the fabric, a translucent material which filled the vast space, waved with the motions of the visitors and the heat from the bulbs. The textile also took the sharp edges off the roof beams and improved the acoustics. Even though the gym was seemingly already a rather lovely venue, surely this rippling beauty has the power to transform any space into something otherworldly.
