On the surface of it, this looks like a terrible piece of project management; they’ve moved the furniture in before finishing the structural renovations. If Sarah Beeny was here someone would be for the high jump. But no, this isn’t a candidate for an episode of DIY SOS, but a carefully considered design concept from the company behind the Rev JW Simpson, a freshly ordained cocktail bar in Fitzrovia, London.

During demolition of the property interior prior to a refit, owners Bourne and Hollingsworth came across the living quarters of the eponymous clergyman waiting patiently underneath the surface. They liked it so much they decided to keep a lot of the features intact, tidying up here and there but leaving the place looking as though the workers have just nipped out for a fag and a brew, and will be back to finish up any minute.

Of course, the fixtures and fittings are new and swanky as befits the area, and there’s a modern cocktail menu, but we can’t help that guilty feeling that we’re only moments away from the other half returning from B&Q to find we still haven’t finished that wallpapering…
