We Hostel Design

Retro accommodation with a cutting edge...

Although the room layout of this 1910s mansion in São Paulo has been preserved, almost everything else has been redesigned by young architect Felipe Hess to create the We Hostel Design project – a sort of live-in gallery showroom where every detail has been meticulously considered. It’s difficult to imagine anywhere with bunk beds as being stylish, but Hess has pulled of the feat with incredible success. The retro furniture and old electronic gadgets sit comfortably alongside more contemporary fixtures; here an old anglepoise lamp, there a modern spotlight, and yet nothing feels out of place.

We Hostel Design also embraces modern technology and guest interactivity, certainly not in the venue’s pleasingly dated TVs and radios, but in the QR codes that creative director Rodrigo Marangoni has dotted around the place, containing individual set lists and tourist maps for guests to discover with their smartphones. Located in the traditional neighbourhood of Vila Mariana, We Hostel Design is a fitting throwback while at the same time boasting enough modernity to accommodate even the most demanding traveller.
