Le Sergent Recruteur

French elegance abounds at smooth eatery...

It comes to something when a French restaurant enlists a Spaniard to mastermind its interior, but that’s the kind of reputation Jaime Hayon enjoys. A long-time doyen of the European arts scene, and more importantly a We Heart favourite, Hayon was last featured by us designing these vases for Barcelona Design’s birthday. The reason we mention these ceramics will become clear when you scroll down a little further and see the enormous reprise to that collection towering on a plinth in Le Sergent Recruteur, the Parisian restaurant Hayon created with chef Antonin Bonnet.

Generally, however, the interior of the restaurant is a more subdued affair than the presence of Hayon’s name would suggest, but it is by no means boring. The place, as it moves along, does so with a glide. The sharp edge of modernism has been ignored in favour of smooth curves, as seen in the tables and seating, and a lovely partitioning door is honey-coloured and honeycombed rather than plain and utilitarian. That understated, ornamental quality is present throughout this venue; the Spaniard has succeeded in creating a wonderfully French atmosphere. Stay classy, Paris.
