FLYPOSTING #2, Leeds

We hesitate to call these works of art ‘flyers’, as that suggests something that will be glanced at and discarded – certainly not the ignominious destiny that awaits these beauties...

Renaud Vigourt

Can you remember what posters you had on your walls as a student? For those of you who are still at university, get a job you scrounging bastards. Everyone else who is a productive member of society, cast your minds back. The ones I came up with were a Pulp Fiction promo with Mia Wallace sprawled on the bed smoking, a Breakfast at Tiffany’s one with Hepburn in that black dress and a cigarette holder, and a black and white Bob Dylan guitar-playing portrait proclaiming “The times, they are a-changing”. And so they were.

My roundabout point being that some images, even those used for such base purposes as advertising and promotion, can be memorable, enduring, and artistically valuable. This poster-love is the basis for FLYPOSTING #2, not concerned with films but with gig posters. We hesitate to call these works of art ‘flyers’, as that suggests something that will be glanced at and discarded – certainly not the ignominious destiny that awaits these beauties. The second Leeds event runs in conjunction with the brilliant Leeds International Contemporary Artists Book Fair from 1st March to 11th May (plenty of time for you lazy gits to get out of bed/the pub), and will expand from its headquarters at THE Gallery on Vicar’s Lane to several satellite venues; find them at thegalleryatflannels.blogspot.com.
