Melbourne’s Institute of Technology have unveiled their new design department headquarters – it’s called the Design Hub but may well be more of a hive in both looks and philosophy. Bringing together disparate research groups from across the campus, the Design Hub, from Sean Godsell Architects in conjunction with Peddle Thorp Architects, allows separate semi-permanent warehouse spaces to be set up within the larger building for the duration of the research project, while encouraging a “cross-pollination” of ideas between varying disciplines. Computer studios may sit cheek-by-jowl with other techno-design such as 3D printing, but also rub shoulders with model-makers and illustrators; along with hosting events like its inaugural exhibition from Archizines – that runs till 28th March.

That buzz of internal activity has been reflected on the outside as well – the thousands of discs that create an almost honeycomb effect are automated sunshades, and the ecologically-focused design also incorporates cleverness in water and waste management. Photo-voltaic cells provide the power, and are themselves part of a research project into solar energy, meaning they can evolve and upgrade with the advances in research. In all aspects a buzzing place to be involved with.
