You won’t need many guesses to suss out what kind of restaurant this Bucharest place is while strolling past. Your first clue is the enormous yet brief name emblazoned on the outside awning, and the second, the colour scheme, has an unmistakably Western European look. Bon, as any 10-year-old can tell you, is French for Good, but step through the entrance and what awaits is a far more subtle take on the Gallic cafe-bar, which surpasses its modest name by quite a way.

Principal architect Cristian Corvin is skilled at mixing old and new together, and his combination of purpose-built and recovered items go together like a mouldy blue cheese with a crisp fresh cracker. The footprint of Bon is long and thin, and Corvin has used over 200 knackered old doors and window frames to completely cover the walls, left in the state in which they were recovered and suggesting all sorts of hidden worlds beyond. Plush blue bench seats are among the modern elements that add comfort and luxury to the venue. A classic cocktail.
