Unter

Istanbul's best kept secret, sort of revealed...

If we’re being honest, and we hope we can after all this time, Unter is something of a mystery to us. We can tell you that it’s a 3-storey, 1960s property by the Karaköy Turkish Orthodox Mother Mary Main Church in Istanbul, and the premises has been converted into a gastropub with each floor providing a more relaxed atmosphere as one ascends.

However, whatever secret handshake is required to get upstairs was beyond our dexterity and imagination, and we could only sneak a peek through the keyhole of the second floor with its fireplaced lounge. Up on top is a loft with an open kitchen and sea views which can be rented to large parties, but since we can’t show you that bit, we’ll stick to the ground floor, chipped away plaster revealing original brick, black metal tubes providing cosmetic support and electrical chasing, marble table tops adding weight to the whole space along with the thick wooden bar. As for the rest of Unter, we plan to go in undercover some time soon to get the lowdown on those elusive upper floors.
