Sir Albert Hotel

Get a good knight's sleep on party capital's refined side...

The Sir Albert, Amsterdam – not an imaginative and painful new kind of body piercing, but a classy and restful new place to lay your head in the centre of Europe’s capital of hedonism. Stag groups be warned, one look at the classy black and white old money website should make it clear that this is not the place for you.

Taking its name from the Quartier Latin district’s Albert Cuypstraat location, Sir Albert has 90 individually designed guest rooms in four different price categories, making it on the large side for a boutique hotel. It’s housed in the former Van Moppes diamond factory built in the 19th Century – a rather apt setting if you ask us. The modern amenities never overwhelm what is still a vintage feeling from designers BK Architecture, despite their choice of stylishly contemporary fixtures and fittings.

One aspect that is pleasingly modern, especially for the larger European, is the IZAKAYA restaurant, whose informal sharing menu is served on furniture that is thankfully further from the ground than the home-grown, knee-seizing traditional versions. Arigato for that, Sir Albert.
