Make Mine a Double

Creative hangout re-imagined across the pond...

One way of making sure you don’t get too homesick and always know a good place to go for a drink when you’re away in New York City is to recreate your favourite bar from back home in one of the American hotels. That’s what Tobias Rehberger has done anyway, taking over a part of the Hôtel Americano and transforming it into a revised version of Bar Oppenheimer, his local watering hole in Frankfurt.

Renowned as a late-night cauldron of creativity, the original Bar Oppenheimer is more likely to stimulate artistic debate than a migraine; this incarnation has been re-imagined with a fair amount of artistic spirit to go along with the Vodka Steins that Rehberger has transported across the pond. He aims to create a mix of the familiar and unfamiliar with his rather radical changes to the décor, and if you have a look at the original, job done. This installation was part of the Frieze New York art fair, and London gallery Pilar Corrias, who helped out with this hotel installation, hosted Rehberger’s new collection Change of Mind 1-7, also examining interpretation and perspective, at its stall. This Bar Oppenheimer will remain in situ until 14th July.
