A Material World

Kaffe Fassett – A Life in Colour celebrates a career spanning an amazing five decades, beginning in the 1960s with his transition from painting to material work and bringing us right up to date in the present day...

There was a shop in our town growing up that sold nothing but wool. We called it The Wool Shop. Actually it probably sold needles and thread bobbins and such like, but you know what we mean. Anyway, this was back in the days when knitting was still a favourite pastime in British households, and one name that was never far from the lips of knitting discussions – which were more common than you’d think – was Kaffe Fassett.

It’s no wonder The Wool Shop loved the designs of the Californian textile legend; each of his designs needed at least five different colours to complete…kerchinnng. Kaffe Fassett – A Life in Colour celebrates a career spanning an amazing five decades, beginning in the 1960s with his transition from painting to material work and bringing us right up to date in the present day, including work for Italian fashion giants (and fellow fans of peacock-like displays of colour prowess) Missoni. The Fashion and Textile Museum in Bermondsey Street, London is holding the hands-on exhibition, and you can cop a feel until 29th June.
