Catch the Drift

Let the experience of Denmark's Sculpture by the Sea wash over you...

Experiencing an entire funfair in one go may sound like a surefire shortcut to Vomitsville, but it turns out to be an absorbing way of looking at things when presented by James Dive of The Glue Society. His latest work Once, on display at Denmark’s Aarhus Bay for the Sculpture by the Sea event, is the sum total of a traditional style amusement park, complete with dodgem cars, waltzers and test-your-skills stalls all in one very compact space. Dive used an industrial crusher to create his four-metre cube, seemingly abandoned on the shore by the outgoing tide like a huge piece of flotsam, commenting on “the finality of a lost moment”. Certainly final!

The Aussie art collective’s entry was joined at the event – which runs until 30th June – by a host of other imaginative creations, ranging from the shock of Gary Deirmendjian’s landfill installation, which could use some crushing itself, the mysterious woodland discovery of Ismar Cirkinagic’s MM13, to the humourous but still impressive Remind by Vibeke Nõrgaard Rõnsbo, and a cargo hold of other fascinating work besides. A great excuse for a day at the beach.
