Topping the Bill

André Saraiva treats us to his dream gig line-ups...

Every Spring the festival performers are announced, and and sure as eggs is eggs the fanfares are followed by the inevitable grumblings that so-and-so is missing and plans are made for an expedition to brave the portaloos while James Blunt takes up space between the two bands you really want to see. Even the best line-ups have their “meh” moments, so how good would it be to devise our own fantasy concert bill stuffed with the bands of our dreams? Pretty bloody good, and when you’re an artist like André Saraiva, the days are filled with such flights of fancy.

Saraiva has been around the block – some of the world’s coolest blocks actually, like L.A., New York and Paris – but he’s coming home with Back to Sweden, his collection of flyposters from imaginary gigs in the cities of his travels. The exhibition currently on at Gallery Steinsland Berliner in Stockholm is being held until 9 September as part of Stockholm Fashion Week, and as well as the posters, rendered on wood and splattered with the collateral damage of street art spray cans, Saraiva has constructed two mini nightclub sculptures as make-believe venues. Mickey Mouse certainly seems excited anyway…
